Hiking

There are hiking trails for all abilities in and around Breckenridge. Whether you choose to go on a short loop for an hour or dedicate your day to bagging Quandary Peak, the views are usually spectacular. Keep in mind that you are at high altitude and the weather can change from sunny to thunderstorms within minutes. Always bring a daypack, plenty of water and layer with fleece and a waterproof shell. It's also always best to hike in at least trail runner shoes - preferably in hiking boots. If you choose to go into backcountry areas, bring bear spray (we'll loan you a can) to keep our furry friends at bay.

Easy - 1 to 2 Hours

Located at the southeast corner of the Ice Rink parking lot, this is a 1 mile loop along Illinois Creek to visit our local giant troll. Flat and easily accessible for all - no more than 10 minutes from Bob and Karen's house.

Blue River Recreation Path

The 'Rec' Path runs along the Blue River from the town of Breckenridge all the way to Frisco. Lots of walkers, bikes, strollers and dogs. Park in any of the town lots along Park Avenue and take a stroll. Plenty of brew pubs, restaurants and shops are within a few yards.

Located over nearby Hoosier Pass, this 2 mile out-and-back offers great views of Quandary Peak and is mostly above treeline at close to 12,000 feet.

Moderate - 2 to 4 Hours

One of the most popular loops south of town, Spruce Creek is a 4 mile loop that usually takes about 2 hours.

Spectacular views as you climb 700 feet in the 2 miles to the top. Short, steep and heavily traveled, but worth it for the views.

Challenging 6.5 mile out-and-back trail 5 minutes south of Bob and Karen's house in Blue River.

Difficult - 4+ Hours

8.5 mile out-and-back by Crystal Creek Road. When you arrive at the first lake, keep right onto the narrow trail. The road to the left is a dead end. The hike to the second lake is steep and very rocky towards the end. An early start and good shoes are a must.

Located a few miles south of Breckenridge off of Highway 9, this challenging hike to the summit of Quandary Peak features incredible views and rocky switchbacks. This popular 14er is not as difficult as many of the others are, making it an extremely popular introductory 14er for those who have never hiked one before. This out-and-back to the summit will take most hikers about 4 1/2 hours and an early start is important to avoid being caught above tree line when the afternoon thunderstorms roll in - plan on being at the trailhead no later than 5:30am. Parking is extremely limited so check parkquandary.com for more information.
